Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Nick Sando and Alex Reelfs combined for a four-hit shutout and Matt Jew hit a three-run home run in Santa Clara baseball's 5-0 series opening win over BYU on Thursday.
Sando made his first career start on the bump and gave up just one hit and struck out six over 4 2/3 innings, while Reelfs (2-0) pitched the remaining 4 1/3 innings to scatter three hits and fanned five to pick up the win.
Matt Jew provided the offense with a home run in the second with two men onboard against BYU starter Easton Walker (1-2) as part of a five run inning which saw nine Broncos come to the plate.
Jew took the 2-2 offering from Walker and deposited it over the left field wall to give Santa Clara (10-14, 3-4), who have now won the last three conference games, a 4-0 lead.
Jason Dicochea who went 2-for-4, drove in a run in the second inning for the Broncos' fifth run.
BYU (8-14, 4-3) had their best opportunity to score in the fifth when Sando issued back-to-back walks to Freddy Achecar and Abraham Valdez after getting two outs. That prompted a pitching change to Reelfs who walked the first batter he faced to load the bases but struck out Andrew Pintar to thwart the Cougars threat.
The Cougars finished the game 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
