Baseball Routs BYU 11-3 on Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Michael O'Hara and Mike Bowes each drove in three runs as Santa Clara baseball scored all of its runs in the second and third innings in a 11-3 rout of BYU on Friday.

Santa Clara (11-14, 4-4) has now won four-straight games including the first two of the series against the Cougars (8-15, 4-4).

O'Hara went 2-for-4 and scored two runs while Coleman Brigman and Jason Dicochea each drove in two runs.  Tony Boetto had a game-high three hits.

In the second inning, O'Hara kicked started the Bronco offense with a two-run single against BYU starter Carter Smith to put SCU up 2-0.  The sophomore outfielder was the fourth of seven-straight batters to safely reach base to start the inning.  Dawson Brigman drew a bases loaded walk followed by Coleman Brigman's RBI single to help the Broncos put up four runs in the frame.

The Broncos broke the game open with seven runs in the third sending 11 batters to the plate.  O'Hara once again got things started with an RBI single to bring home Boetto who doubled to lead off the inning to extend the lead to 5-0.  Boetto was the only batter Smith faced in the inning before being replaced by Tyson Heaton.

Coleman Brigman and Dichocea added RBI base hits in the inning that was capped off by Bowes' three-run home run to right field against Cooper McKeehan to give the Broncos an 11-0 cushion.

Andrew Pintar drove in all three runs for BYU with a two-run home run off Bronco starter Russell Grant in the fourth and a solo shot from Brandon Buckley in the sixth.

Buckley (2-1) came into the game in the fifth inning and threw two innings to pick up the win.  Jared Feikes pitched the final three innings without allowing a run to earn his first career save.

Smith (0-2) gave up five runs over two innings for the loss.

NEXT UP

Santa Clara will go for a series sweep against BYU on Saturday.  First pitch is at 1 p.m.  Due to current State of California guidelines, spectators will not be permitted inside Stephen Schott Stadium. In addition, only essential personnel is allowed on campus.
