SAN JOSE, Calif. - Hannah Edwards tossed an eight-inning shutout and the Santa Clara softball bats came alive in the extra inning to take the midweek nonconference game 5-0 against San José State on Wednesday night.

Edwards (7-5) scattered five hits and walked two on 123 pitches while Morgan Salmon and Lauren LaHood came through with two RBIs each.  The victory put the Broncos above .500 on the season at 22-21.

The game was scoreless through the first seven innings in a pitcher's duel between Edwards and Lacie Ham.

In the eighth, Ashley Trierweiler got the offense started drawing a walk with one out.  Trierweiler reached based in all four plate appearances going 3-for-3 to raise her Division I leading batting average to .537

Allyson Ferreira followed with another bases on balls and Sammy Needham loaded the bases with a single.  Salmon broke the scoreless deadlock doubling home the first two runs of the game.  LaHood singled in two more runs to push the lead out to 4-0 as the Spartans made a pitching change to Ashley Goard.

Facing Goard, Emma Bickford hit a triple to bring home the fifth and final run of the inning.

San José State (21-25) had early opportunities putting a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings but every time, Edwards was able to pitch herself out of the jam as she retired 15 of the final 17 batters.

Lam (6-12) was equally impressive before she ran out of gas in the eighth as she gave up five runs on eight hits, walked four and struck out six.
