Baseball Drops First Game at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Santa Clara baseball fell 7-1 at Portland in the opener of a crucial West Coast Conference series.

The Pilots (25-19, 14-8 WCC) got on the board right away with three runs in the first and followed it up with another in the second. The bats would be quiet until the eighth when they added on with three more.

Nick Brink (4-0) was tremendous in the start and collected the win. He allowed a run on seven hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over 7 innings. Jacob Dobmeier went the final 2 innings to get the save.

Zach Toglia had the big blow in the first, a two-run home run that make it a crooked number. Nich Klemp added a pair of RBIs as well with Evan Scavotto collecting three hits and an RBI. Henry Muench had two hits and scored a pair of runs.

The Broncos (27-17, 13-9 WCC) lone run came in the fifth when Efrain Manzo knocked in Thomas Ferroggiaro with a single. Ferroggiaro, Malcolm Williams, and Michael O'Hara all had two hits.

Cole Kitchen (3-2) started and ended up with the loss in 7 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs on 10 hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.
