Broncos Fall at San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The Santa Clara women's volleyball team fell to the San Diego Toreros 3-0 on Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. The Broncos were led by Alayna Crabtree with 13 kills, hitting .304, her second highest percentage of the season. Nive Tuileta (14) and Macy Hinshaw (11) both recorded double figures in assists in the loss.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set one went back-and-forth until San Diego (12-7, 7-2) scored five points in a row to take a 12-7 lead. The Broncos cut it to 14-11 with an ace from Grace Flanagan, but San Diego scored the next two to go up 16-11, and later 21-13. The Broncos cut it to 21-15, but USD scored four of the last five points to take set one 25-16.
  • Set two was neck-and-neck until San Diego scored two in a row to take a 14-11 lead. Santa Clara battled back, cutting the lead to 19-16 after a kill from Elena Radeff, but a San Diego service ace put them up 23-18. The Broncos cut it to 23-20, but San Diego ultimately finished off the set 25-21.
  • San Diego opened the third set on a tear, scoring the first seven points. The Broncos cut the lead to 12-7 after a kill from Layla Truitt, and later 14-10, before San Diego scored three in a row to go up 20-13. Three straight points for the Toreros put them ahead 23-14, and they eventually took the set 25-17.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Alayna Crabtree led the Broncos with 13 kills, her 13th game of the season in double figures.
  • Crabtree also led the team hitting .304, her second highest percentage of the season.
  • Two Broncos recorded double figures in assists: Nive Tuileta (14) and Macy Hinshaw (11).
 
UP NEXT: The Broncos will travel to Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. before returning home to the Leavey Center for two matches next week against Oregon St. on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. and Portland on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
