Women's Basketball Rolls by Cal Maritime

Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball returned home and beat Cal Maritime 86-27 Saturday afternoon. The Broncos (5-4) took control for good midway through the first quarter and kept the Keelhaulers (2-7) in check the rest of the way. The 59-point victory was seventh largest in program history and the fourth largest in Leavey Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a slow start for both teams and the game was tied at 6-all midway through the first. Santa Clara would close the period on a 10-0 run to take a 16-6 lead.
  • The run continued into the second with the Broncos scoring the first 15 to make it a 25-0 stretch that made the score 31-6. They would hold a 36-12 advantage at the halftime break.
  • A 17-0 run for Santa Clara in the third quarter grew the lead to 55-14 with 4:50 left in the period. An 11-0 run later in the quarter continued to stretch the advantage and after three quarters the Broncos had a 67-19 lead.
  • Things continued with another 17-0 Santa Clara run in the fourth that got the lead to a game-high 62.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  •  Santa Clara shot 40.0-percent from the field despite going just 3-of-19 from downtown.
  • Cal Maritime shot just 16.1-percent from the floor while going 6-of-38 from deep. The 85 field goal attempts were the fourth-most in program history.
  • A balanced attack led the Broncos on offense with four players in double-figures. Georgia Grigoropoulou both scored 14 with seven rebounds with Irena Korolenko and Kaya Ingram adding 10 apiece. Hannah Rapp had nine points and 11 rebounds to just miss a double-double with Maya Curtis scoring nine with seven boards.
  • Jaz Novelli led the Keelhaulers with 15 on 6-of-12 shooting.
  • Santa Clara had a 32-6 advantage in points off turnovers while forcing 24 for Cal Maritime.
  • The Broncos won the battle of the boards 73-34 with 31 offensive boards that led to a 22-6 edge in second chance points. The 73 rebounds were a Bronco record in Leavey Center and the second-most in any game in program history (vs. Lincoln 12/2/22).
  • Santa Clara also had advantages of 32-6 in bench points, 58-6 in points in the paint, and 25-0 in fast break points.
  • All 10 Broncos to play made a field goal.

  • Lauren Grover, a four-year member of the Santa Clara volleyball team, made her basketball debut.
