SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team has it on repeat by now.
Â
10-plus runs, 10-plus hits, shutout relief on the mound, come from behind to win…
Â
The Broncos did it once again on Saturday, scoring 11 unanswered runs on 11 hits, getting five innings of shutout relief and erasing an early 1-0 deficit to clinch a series win over visiting UMBC with an 11-1 victory in game two of the series at Schott Stadium.
Â
Saturday marked the fourth time in a row Santa Clara (3-2) scored double-digit runs, the fourth consecutive game in which it had at least 10 hits, the third game in a row it came from behind to win, and the second straight game with the bullpen putting up nothing but zeros.
Â
The Broncos scored runs in four consecutive innings from the fourth through seventh, putting the game away for good with a six-spot in the seventh.
Efrain Manzo did most of the damage for Santa Clara, going 3 for 3 with a career-high-tying five RBIs and only needing a triple for the cycle. His two-run homer in the sixth made it 5-1, and his bases-loaded, three-run double in the seventh buried the Retrievers (0-2) with a 10-1 score at the time.
Jordan Lewis (2 for 4) had Santa Clara's other multi-hit game while scoring and driving in a run. The Broncos drew 11 more walks Saturday after drawing 10 in Friday night's opener. Three of those walks (and a hit-by-pitch) came around to score, and four others made it into scoring position, creating traffic on the basepaths for the UMBC pitching staff all afternoon.
Â
Max Bayles,
Josh Johnson and
Jack Lazark combined to throw five innings of shutout, no-hit relief. Bayles (2-0) earned his second win in as many weekends with two innings near-perfect work. He struck out four and only walked one, his only blemish.
Josh Johnson threw 1 2/3 innings of relief with a strikeout, and Lazark closed the game out with 1 1/3 innings, only facing one over the minimum.
Â
Ben Cleary's first career triple tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth, and
JonJon Berring drove him home in the next at-bat with a hard-hit groundball to put the Broncos up for good at 2-1.
Â
UMBC's Matt Ryan went 2 for 4 to lead the Retrievers offensively. UMBC starter Jayden Shertel (0-1) only allowed two runs on three hits in four innings, but he walked five against only two strikeouts.
Â
The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon. Santa Clara righty
Cole Kitchen is set to face UMBC right-hander Sam Downs. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links at SantaClaraBroncos.com.
