SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Santa Clara University baseball's
JonJon Berring somehow figured out a way to top his opening week performance, earning his second consecutive Rawlings West Coast Conference Player of the Week Award Monday for the week of Feb. 19-25 after an electric finish Sunday.
Â
Berring hit a walk-off grand slam Sunday to send Santa Clara to a 10-9 win and a three-game sweep over UMBC. And that was only a week after he led the nation in home runs and earned both the season's first WCC Player of the Week award and a National Hitter of the Week nod.
Â
Berring came up with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning Sunday, the Broncos trailing 9-6. He worked the count to 1-2, then launched a high-arching home run over the right field wall to send the crowd and his dugout into a frenzy. It was Berring who started the Broncos' comeback in the bottom of the seventh. UMBC had just pushed its lead to 6-0 in the top half, so Berring responded with a leadoff double on the first pitch and scored the Broncos' first run of the game two pitches later on an RBI single. He doubled again in the eighth and moved to third on a wild pitch but was stranded there. The Broncos got him another opportunity in the ninth, and he delivered with his biggest hit yet.
Â
Berring stole three bases in Friday's series opener. He drove in five runs and scored five times with three extra-base hits on the weekend. Sunday's big day included a 4-for-6 showing at the plate with two doubles and the game-winning grand slam. For the week, he batted .385, slugged .769 and had an on-base percentage of .529. He also played a perfect left field with a 1.000 fielding percentage in four chances.
Â
Berring and the Broncos head out on a four-game road trip starting across town on Tuesday. Santa Clara faces crosstown rival San Jose State at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday, then heads to the Pacific Northwest for a three-game series in Seattle at Pac-12 Conference member Washington.
