SPOKANE, Wash. — The Santa Clara University baseball team did it again Saturday.
The Broncos led early, like they did in Friday's opener, and battled to the end – like they did Friday – with the tying run in scoring position during the ninth, forcing host Gonzaga to survive for the second straight day, as the Bulldogs scraped by with a 3-2 West Coast Conference win at Patterson Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (15-13, 3-5 WCC) got a go-ahead solo home run in the first inning Saturday from the second spot in the order, just like they did Friday. This time it was Jordan Lewis who hit his first career homer to put the Broncos up, 1-0. SCU added a run in the next frame on an RBI fielder's choice from Dylan Joyce to go up, 2-0.
- Gonzaga (9-18, 6-2 WCC) answered in the bottom of the second with three consecutive singles to put its first run on the board. Santa Clara starter Cade Pilchard (2-2) retired the next two batters, but back came the Bulldogs with two more consecutive singles to score two more runs and take their 3-2 lead.
- Pilchard would go five innings with seven strikeouts and only one walk, while Brandon Gomez relieved him with three shutout innings and only one hit allowed. Gonzaga got big relief performances from Payton Graham, who threw three shutout innings and got the first out in the ninth, Daniel Sotelo, who got the second out, and Erik Hoffberg, who got the final out of the game for his second consecutive save in the series.
- Malcolm Williams led off the top of the ninth reaching on an error and was bunted over to second, giving the Broncos a chance with the tying run in scoring position. But Sotelo and Hoffberg got a pop-up and a strikeout, respectively, to end the game.
