SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga brought strong pitching for the third consecutive day and once again had the key hits, as the Bulldogs held off the Santa Clara University baseball team Sunday to finish a West Coast Conference series sweep with a 6-1 win at Patterson Baseball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johnny Luetzow posted his first multi-hit game of the year and also drove in the Broncos' (15-14, 3-6 WCC) lone run with an RBI double in the fourth. His run-scoring knock put Santa Clara on the board and made it 5-1 at the time.
Â
- Gonzaga (10-18, 7-2 WCC) put up four runs in the third inning to grow its lead from 1-0 to 5-0. That included a big, three-run home run off the bat of Jordan Hamberg that turned a close, 2-0, game into a 5-0 advantage for the Bulldogs. The long ball was Gonzaga's fourth home run of the series.
Â
- Miles Gosztola threw seven innings of one-run ball for Gonzaga, striking out nine against only one walk. Michael Cunneely closed it out with two shutout frames with only one hit and three strikeouts.
Â
- Josh Johnson, Nico Stanley and Sebastian Schreiber combined to throw 2 1/3 shutout innings of relief for the Broncos at the end of the game. Johnson recorded three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 4: Michael O'Hara extended his modest hitting streak to four with a hit Sunday. He had a hit in all three games during the Gonzaga series and is hitting .400 during his streak.
- 12: The Broncos' 12 strikeouts Sunday marked the ninth time this season the lineup has recorded at least 10 Ks. The team is 4-5 in those games, though they've dropped four of their last five games with double-digit strikeouts at the plate.
