SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Seven Santa Clara softball student-athletes were named West Coast Conference All-Academic on Monday.
Hannah Edwards and
Bailey McLaughlin were chosen to the WCC All-Academic Team and five –
Robynn Balmediano,
Leiora Davidson,
Hazyl Gray,
Sage Hager and
Morgan Salmon – were tabbed as honorable mention.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while being a starter or important reserve (participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests) with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution.
Edwards has a cumulative grade point average of 4.000 pursuing a master of arts in counseling psychology to earn her first All-Academic Team selection. The redshirt junior tied for the conference lead with 13 wins finishing with a 13-6 record and a 3.01 ERA. She started in 21 of the 29 games she appeared in.
McLaughlin has a 3.663 GPA in civil engineering. The senior was previously named honorable mention All-Academic twice, in 2022 and 2023. This season, she started in all 53 games primarily at center field and posted the second best batting average on the team at .324. She also swiped 18 bases, a total good for second on the team.
Balmediano has a 3.453 GPA while majoring in psychology to earn her first All-Academic honorable mention recognition. She started in 28 of the 35 game she played in, hitting .315. Eight of her 23 hits went for extra bases.
A sophomore, Davidson, was named honorable mention in her first eligible season for the league's All-Academic recognition. She has a 3.672 GPA majoring in public health science. The sophomore played in 45 games, starting in 40 primarily at first base. She finished third on the team in home runs and RBIs with four and 23, respectively.
Gray, with a 3.263 GPA in biochemistry, earned her first All-Academic honorable mention honor. The sophomore two-way player led the team in batting average (.333), hits (55), doubles (9), home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.545) while starting in all 53 games. She also had 19 appearances in the circles and posted a 4-5 record and a save.
Hager has a 3.481 GPA in public health science and recorded a 3-1 record to be named honorable mention All-Academic for the first time.
This is the second honorable mention recognition for Salmon who has a 3.616 GPA majoring in child studies. She started in all 53 games and finished with a team-high 38 RBIs and was second in home runs with six.
