Broncos Fall to WSU 3-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's volleyball team fell to the Washington State Cougars 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif. The team lost the first set and battled back to take the second, before WSU won the final two sets. The Broncos were led by Alayna Crabtree with 16 kills and Halle Reiter with 15 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Washington State (5-4) took a commanding lead in the first set 18-10 after four straight points. They scored seven of the next eight points to take the victory 25-12.
  • The second set was neck-and-neck until Santa Clara (4-5) scored four points in a row to take a 15-11 lead. After a WSU point, the Broncos scored the next seven points capped off by a kill from Alayna Crabtree to take a 22-12 lead. After a rally from Washington State, the Broncos finally took the set 25-18 capped off by a kill from Elena Radeff.
  • Washington State scored three in a row to break a deadlock in the third set, 20-17. After a kill from Elena Radeff, the Cougars scored five of the next seven points to take the set, 25-19.
  • WSU jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the fourth set, and later 10-5. The Broncos fought back, tying the set at 15. The Broncos took their first lead of the set 18-17 after a kill from Alayna Crabtree, however, Washington State scored the next three points to take a 20-18 lead
  • A kill from Lauren Grover cut the WSU lead to 21-20, but WSU scored the next three points to take a 24-20 lead. A kill from Morgan Hayes made it 24-21, but WSU scored the final point of the set to take the match, 25-21.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Alayna Crabtree led the team with 16 kills, her seventh game of the season with double figure kills.
  • Halle Reiter had 15 digs, her fifth game of the season with double figures digs.
  • Lauren Grover had a career high 4 service aces.
  • Alayna Crabtree led the team hitting .433, a season high.
