MORAGA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball dropped a five set nailbiter to the Saint Mary's Gaels Saturday night at the University Credit Union Pavilion. The Broncos dropped the first set and won sets two and four before falling in an all-or-nothing fifth set. Four Broncos had double figures in kills led by
Cate Shanahan with 14.
Lexi Trapani posted a career high 24 digs, and
Macy Hinshaw had her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 21 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Four points in a row from Saint Mary's gave them an early 5-1 lead, and later 10-4 after a three point rally. Three straight points from the Broncos cut the lead to 17-13, but Saint Mary's again took a comfortable lead, 23-17, eventually taking the set 25-19.
- The Broncos (8-8, 2-2) scored the first two points of set two, and later three in a row to take a 7-4 lead after an ace by Cate Shanahan. However, the Gaels scored three in a row to retake the lead 12-11. Four straight Bronco points put them back ahead 15-12 heading into the media timeout, and later the Broncos kept pace going up 22-17 after a kill from Layla Truitt. Three straight from Saint Mary's cut the lead to 22-20, but the Broncos answered with a kill from Cate Shanahan ending the set 25-23.
- Set three went back-and-forth until Saint Mary's scored three in a row to take a 15-11 lead, and later 20-15. A kill by Macy Hinshaw cut the lead to 21-18, but Saint Mary's was able to take the set 25-20.
- The Broncos scored seven in a row to take an 8-2 lead to open set four after a kill from Tia Kapihe, and later 18-9, after an ace from Lexi Trapani. A kill from Truitt made it 23-15, and a kill from Shanahan and a Truitt block gave the Broncos set four 25-17.
- The Gaels took control of the later end of set five with six straight points to take a 14-7 lead. The Broncos scored three in a row to cut the lead to 14-10, but eventually Saint Mary's took the set and the match 15-10.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Four Broncos had double figures in kills led by Cate Shanahan (14), Layla Truitt (13), Grace Flanagan (12) and Morgan Hayes (12).
- Macy Hinshaw had her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 21 digs.
- Lexi Trapani posted a career high 24 digs.
- The Broncos had a season high 69 digs, besting their previous season high of 66 in the season opener at Notre Dame (8/29).
