SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball won a five set thriller over Gonzaga for the second time this season. The Broncos again dropped set one, before winning sets two, three, and five. It was a complete team victory for the Broncos who saw four players in double figures in kills, while
Cate Shanahan had her fourth double double of the season with 15 kills and 14 digs.
Macy Hinshaw also added 51 assists and 10 digs, her ninth double double of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Gonzaga (10-9, 3-5) took an early 6-2 lead to open set one, and later 14-5 after five straight points. Three straight points stretched the Bulldog lead to 21-9, and another three straight ended set one, 25-11.
- The Broncos (10-9, 5-3) took an early 12-8 lead to open set two after a kill from Grace Flanagan. Gonzaga cut it to two at 16-14, but a kill from Morgan Hayes extended the lead to 20-15. Gonzaga again cut the deficit to two, and even one, but kills from Morgan Hayes and Layla Truitt gave the Broncos set two, 25-22.
- The Broncos scored six straight points to take a 10-5 lead in set three, and later 13-6 after a kill from Layla Truitt. Four straight points capped off by a Hayes kill made it 19-13, and an ace from Alyssa Eimer gave the Broncos set point, 24-19. A Gozga service error put the Broncos up 2-1.
- Gonzaga took a 6-3 lead to open set four in a must win game for them. However, four straight points from the Broncos helped them regain the lead 17-15, forcing a Gonzaga timeout. Four straight Gonzaga points flipped the script again giving them the win, 25-22.
- Six straight points from the Broncos put them ahead 7-3, and later 10-6. Three straight Bronco points put them up 13-8, and a Gonzaga service error ended it, 15-11.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Cate Shanahan had her fourth double double of the season with 15 kills and 14 digs.
- Morgan Hayes also had 15 kills, her 10th game of the season in double figures.
- Grace Flanagan tied her career high with 12 kills, her fourth game of the season in double figures.
- Layla Truitt also added 11 kills , her 12th game of the season in double digits.
- Lexi Trapani totaled 22 digs, two shy of her career high at Saint Mary's on Oct. 11.
- Macy Hinshaw totaled 51 assists and 10 digs, her ninth double double of the season.
- Both Morgan Hayes and Grace Flanagan hit over .500, the first time since a Bronco has hit over .500 since Layla Truitt hit .706 at Fresno State on Sept. 12.
- This is the 10th straight win for the Broncos over the Bulldogs.
