SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball dropped a four set match over conference leader San Diego Saturday at the Leavey Center. After dropping set one, the Broncos battled back winning set three, but were unable to hang on, falling in set four. The Broncos had four players with double figures in kills led by
Selin Aslayan and
Grace Flanagan with 12 each.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Four straight points from San Diego gave them a 4-1 lead to open set one, and later 15-8 heading into the media timeout. Four straight San Diego points made it 18-10, and San Diego finished off set one, 25-16.
- San Diego (23-4, 16-0) scored five straight to put them up 9-5, and later 12-6, but a kill from Grace Flanagan capped off back-to-back Bronco points to cut the lead to 16-13. Three straight from USD extended the lead to 20-15, and the Toreros eventually took the set, 25-19.
- Santa Clara (15-12, 10-6) jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open set three after an ace from Selin Aslayan, and later 12-5 after back-to-back aces from Flanagan. Another ace, this time from Macy Hinshaw, put the Broncos up 23-14, but four straight points from USD cut the lead to five. Finally, a kill from Morgan Hayes ended set three in favor of the Broncos 25-21.
- San Diego jumped out to a 10-5 advantage to open set four, and later 15-9 after four straight points. Five straight San Diego points made it 23-14, and San Diego eventually took the set
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Grace Flanagan had 12 kills, her seventh game of the season in double figures.
- Layla Truitt had her team leading 19th game of the season in double figures with 10 kills.
- Selin Aslayan also added 12 kills, her ninth game this season with 10 or more.
- Lexi Trapani added 13 digs for her 23rd time this season in double figures.
- Macy Hinshaw finished with 42 assists and seven digs, two digs short of her 12th double-double of the season.
- The Broncos finished with eight service aces, two shy of their season high of 10 set at San Jose State on Sept. 16.
