Broncos Beat Pacific for Sixth Straight Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball defeated the Pacific Tigers in four sets Saturday, marking their sixth straight win and eighth in the last nine matches. The Broncos were led by Cate Shanahan (16) and Layla Truitt (14) in kills, while Grace Flanagan had 10 kills and a season high eight blocks. Lexi Trapani led the way with 21 digs and Macy Hinshaw had 42 assists, keeping her streak of hitting double figures in every game this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Broncos (14-9, 9-3) took a 3-0 lead to open set one after a kill from Layla Truitt, but Pacific answered with a 9-1 run. However, the Broncos battled back with eight straight points of their own to take a 12-9 lead. Another three straight made it 16-12, and later 23-15. A kill by Cate Shanahan finished off set one for the Broncos 25-19.
  • Pacific (8-16, 2-11) started off set two with four straight points to take an 8-2 lead. Three straight Broncos points cut the lead in half, and later to one, 10-9. A service ace from Grace Flanagan tied it at 12, but Pacific answered again, going up 15-13 at the media timeout. The Broncos scored three straight again to tie it at 21, but Pacific finished off the set with three straight of their own, 25-22.
  • Pacific scored five straight to take a 6-4 lead, but a kill from Grace Flanagan gave the Broncos back the lead, 8-7. A kill from Morgan Hayes increased the lead to 12-9, and later 16-12. Six straight Bronco points extended the lead 22-13 after a kill from Shanahan, and a kill from Truitt ended set three 25-17.
  • The Broncos jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open set four, but Pacific cut it to 12-11. An ace from Lexi Trapani made it 16-12, and an ace from Ashlynn Reilly increased the lead to 20-14. The Broncos scored the final four points of the set, sealing it, 25-16.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Cate Shanahan led the Broncos with 16 kills, her 16th game of the season in double figures.
  • Layla Truitt extended her team best 17th game of the season in double figures with 14 kills.
  • Grace Flanagan added 10 kills for her fifth game of the season with 10 or more, totaling a season high eight blocks.
  • Tia Kapihe had her second game of the season in double figures with 10 digs.
  • Lexi Trapani had 21 digs, her 20th time this season with 10 or more, and seventh time with 20 or more.
  • The Broncos had 14 total blocks tonight, tying their most this season since Sept. 27 at Washington State.
  • The victory marks the Broncos sixth straight win, their most since opening the 2019 season 6-0 in head coach Erin Lindsey's first year.
  • The Broncos have now won eight of the last nine games since Oct. 4.
  • Their 14 victories and nine conference wins are also the most since 2019.
