Baseball's Comeback Try Stymied at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. — This time it was host UC Davis' turn to break a tie and hold on for a victory, as the Aggies earned a non-conference series win Sunday with a 6-2 win at Dobbins Stadium, turning back another comeback effort by the Santa Clara University baseball team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis (5-2) scored first Sunday for the third consecutive day, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly. But Santa Clara (3-3) responded the very next half-inning, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI groundout from Mateo Garcia that was fueled in part by a defensive miscue by the Aggies, which moved two runners into scoring position.

  • The Aggies took the lead right back, however, with a two-out rally in their next turn at bat. An infield single, a seeing-eye single up the middle, and back-to-back walks – all with two outs – brought home the go-ahead run, making it 2-1. Santa Clara starter Victor Martinez (0-1) only allowed those two runs in his first start of the year, striking out four in four innings of work.

  • Santa Clara mounted rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but fell short of earning its fourth come-from-behind win in the young season. Tate Medicoff doubled home Max Ross in the eighth, pulling the Broncos to within 6-2, but was stranded at third base with the tying run in the hole. SCU put two runners on in the ninth and put the tying run on deck, but two flyouts ended the game.

  • Ben Cleary (2 for 3, two walks) reached base four times from the leadoff spot in the order, and Dylan Joyce (2 for 4) posted his third multi-hit game of the year for the Broncos. UC Davis had five multi-hit performances, as it outhit Santa Clara, 14-6.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: Jace Gillmore (two unearned runs allowed) and Caden Wooster (no runs allowed) maintained their 0.00 ERAs with no earned runs allowed Sunday. They're one of three pitchers (Henry Stewart the third) on the Broncos' staff who have yet to allow an earned run this season.
  • 3: UC Davis scored three runs with two outs on Sunday. On three separate occasions, the Aggies got base runners on after the first two batters of the inning had been retired.
  • 12: Cleary's two hits and two walks extended his active reached base streak to 12 games, dating back to last season.
COMING UP
  • Santa Clara's road trip continues on Tuesday with a trip across town to San Jose State. It concludes with the first two games of a home-and-home series versus California, with games one and two on Friday and Saturday being contested in Berkeley.
