Robles Ties For Fifth, Broncos Take Sixth At the N.I.T.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Santa Clara men's golf saved their best round for last at the N.I.T hosted by Arizona at Omni Tucscon National, turning in a 9-under 279 in Tuesday's final round to open the spring with a sixth-place finish at 19-under 284-282-279--845. Freshman Matthew Robles led the charge with a tie for fifth at 11-under 69-67-69--205 for his second top-five finish of the year and the second-lowest 54-hole total by any Bronco this season. 

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Playing in just his fourth event of the year, Robles carded in the 60s in all three rounds and tallied 12 combined birdies for the event, as well as an eagle on the par-5 15th as part of a bogey-free second round 67. During Tuesday's final round, he logged four birdies and his lone blemish on the scorecard was a birdie on the par-4 No. 7. 
  • Robles' fifth-place finish is tied for his best of the year. He also tied for fifth at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate. 
  • Calder Overfelt also started his spring off strong with a tie for 22nd at 5-under 211, using a pair of 69s in the first and final rounds to lock up his fifth top-25 finish of the season. Overfelt tallied 15 combined birdies over the three rounds, including four on Tuesday to offset one bogey. 
  • Alvaro Muller (71) and J.P. Odland (70) each shot under par on Tuesday as well to climb five and nine spots, respectively. Muller tied for 38th at 1-under 74-70-71--215 while Odland tied for 47th at 1-over 72-75-70--217. 
  • Odland's final round 2-under 70 was his eighth round under par on the year, tying Emil Nielsen for most on the team. 
  • The Broncos improved in each round of the tournament. They started with 4-under 284 in Monday's opening round and was playing even better in the second round before play was suspended due to darkness with just three holes remaining. After playing out those final three holes early Tuesday morning, they turned their attention to the final round and climbed two spots in the standings thanks to their 9-under 279, edging out Saint Mary's (846) for sixth and finishing five strokes behind Iowa State (840). 
  • BYU ran away with with the team title with an outstanding 50-under 270-272-272--814 to finish 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Arizona (828). Iowa State's Paul Beauvy claimed medalist honors with a 15-under 67-70-64--201 final tally.
