SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Visiting California took advantage of the cold, double-digit-mph winds blowing through Stephen Schott Stadium's left field Sunday to the tune of eight home runs and 12 total extra-base hits, as the Golden Bears finally won a game over the Santa Clara University baseball team in their non-conference series, 19-3.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (6-4) actually led, 3-2, through four innings Sunday. And through the first two innings it looked to be shaping into another pitchers' duel, as the Broncos scraped across the game's only run to that point on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead after two.
Â
- Right-hander Tyler Alleman made his first career start Sunday and was putting on quite a display for himself. The redshirt freshman had allowed six runs (five earned) in his first three appearances of 2025 and came into Sunday with a 13.50 ERA, but he was polished against the Golden Bears (6-5). Alleman threw a career-long four innings and strukout out a career-best three while only walking one. He shut out California through the first two innings, and before the day was over, lowered his season ERA by more than 3 1/2 runs.
Â
- California got to Alleman once in both the third and fourth innings with leadoff solo home runs that were poked up into the wind and over the left field wall. Alleman stayed strong both times, though, retiring the next three batters consecutively in both innings. And even after those homers, Santa Clara still led, 3-2, through four. The Broncos had also stranded three runners (one in scoring position) in the first four innings, threatening for an even larger lead.
Â
- But those solo home runs in the third and fourth were only the beginning for the California offense. Once Alleman departed in the top of the fifth after walking the leadoff batter, the Golden Bears exploded for three home runs, a go-ahead two-run shot and two more solo homers, both on the first pitch. The trio of long balls included the second of the game already for both Alex Birge and Cade Campbell. It was Campbell's second in as many innings, part of a string of three consecutive home runs he'd hit in three consecutive innings.
Â
- Cal's offensive output doubled in the sixth with two more home runs and eight runs scored. The Bears sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning. The rally was boosted by four consecutive walks with no outs, while Campbell hit his third home run of the game, this one a three-run shot. California hit leadoff home runs in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, and in the fifth it got a home run from the second batter after the leadoff man walked.
Â
- The Golden Bears put the game away for good with five more runs in the seventh. The team hit for the cycle within its first five batters of the inning, getting a leadoff homer, a triple, a double and a single. Another first-pitch triple later brought in the Bears' second-to-last run. Vincent Braga entered the game for his first collegiate appearance and got two groundouts – one a run-scoring groundout for Cal's final score – to end the inning.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 1st: Braga made his first career appearance Sunday, and Bryce Padilla made his first appearance for the Broncos since 2023 after redshirting last season with an injury.
- 4: Malcolm Williams went 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. That pushed his new hit streak to four games. He's hit safely in nine of the Broncos' 10 games this season and 16 of his last 17 dating to last season.
COMING UP
- The series finale is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday. The Broncos then take off for a three-game road trip at currently top-15-ranked Texas starting Friday in Austin, Texas.
