SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A come-from-behind win, a walk-off hit, and a mercy rule victory all in the same game?
That's exactly what the Santa Clara University baseball team did Friday night, with
Koen Carston's bases-clearing double in the eighth inning giving the Broncos a 10-run mercy-rule win in walk-off fashion after they trailed twice early, as they beat the Tritons, 12-2, in game two of the teams' non-conference series at Stephen Schott Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (11-11) trailed, 2-1, through 4 1/2 innings Friday, with UC San Diego starter Matthew Dalquist (3-2) dealing. Daiquist entered the game with a 2.34 season ERA and had only allowed one run on four hits through his first four innings. But like Thursday's series opener, the Broncos took advantage of UCSD mistakes, this time in the form of four errors – two in the fifth inning alone – and six walks by the bullpen, to score runs in every inning from the fifth to the eighth.
Â
- RBI singles in the fifth from Mateo Garcia and Max Ross were part of a chaotic three-run rally that included two UC San Diego errors and put the Broncos ahead for good at 4-2. Two more errors by UC San Diego (13-12) in the sixth led to three more runs for Santa Clara – two unearned – and the lead ballooned to 7-2.
Â
- Three leadoff walks issued by new UCSD reliever Harry Pelzman loaded the bases with no outs and set up the Broncos' walk-off rally in the eighth. Ben Cleary knocked in a run in the seventh with an RBI double to make it 8-2, and Malcolm Williams started the scoring in the eighth with an RBI single to the opposite-field gap, making it 9-2. Carston wasted no time ending the game one batter later, shooting a bases-loaded double into the right-center field gap to score three runs and give Santa Clara the 12-2 mercy rule win in walk-off fashion.
Â
- Nine different Broncos had at least one hit, eight scored at least one run and six tallied at least one RBI. Dylan Joyce led the way with a career-high four hits, going a perfect 4 for 4 with a double, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Mateo Garcia also had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI.
Â
- Brandon Gomez (3-3) earned his third win of the season in five innings of work, only allowing two runs and striking out five. Victor Martinez cleaned up the rest, throwing three shutout innings in relief, only allowing one hit and striking out four to earn his second save of the year.
Â
- Dalquist finished with four runs allowed (three earned) and two strikeouts in the defeat. The Tritons were limited to only three hits Friday, one from three different players, and none for extra bases. They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Gabe Camacho and went back ahead, 2-1, in the third on a Camacho sacrifice fly.
