Broncos' Power Surges in Setback at No. 12 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas — The Santa Clara University baseball team scored more runs than Friday, had more extra-base hits and even hit a home run on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome 10 free passes issued by Broncos pitching, as No. 12 Texas took advantage, bringing five of them home to score and clinching a non-conference series victory over the Broncos with an 8-3 win in game two at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ben Cleary hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth and Dylan Joyce hit an opposite-field home run to right field in the eighth, his second of the year. Tate Medicoff also doubled off the left field wall in the fourth, as the Broncos' bats popped with more fervor on Saturday than they did with only one double in five hits Friday night.

  • The Broncos (7-6) threatened even more damage, as they did in the series opener, but left seven runners on base, four in scoring position. Many of Santa Clara's scoring opportunities came when there were two outs, a situation in which it went 1 for 8 Saturday. It went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and 2 for 15 (.133) with runners on base, in spite of its increased offensive power at the plate.

  • Three of the Broncos' (7-6) four pitchers Saturday combined to issue seven walks and hit three batters. Five of those free passes would come home to score, helping build No. 12 Texas' (12-1) lead in an eventual five-run decision. The biggest blow came in the fourth inning when a two-out, bases-clearing double from Casey Borba scored three runs – all of which reached base for free – and made the score 7-1 at the time. Half (four) of the Longhorns' runs were scored with two outs Saturday.

  • Cleary finished with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, reaching base three times (hit-by-pitch) and driving in a run. The Broncos drew seven of their own free passes (six walks, one hit-by-pitch) and had five hits for the second consecutive day.

  • Freshman righty Andrew Habermann was solid in relief, throwing 3 1/3 innings and only allowing one run, which scored after he left the game. He struck out three and didn't issue a walk. Henry Stewart also extended his scoreless inning streak to 9 1/3 with another shutout inning of relief. He also logged a strikeout and only allowed a single.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 10: Santa Clara's 10 free passes issued Saturday marked the third time this season it's issued at least 10 in a game. It is 1-2 in those games.
  • 19: Cleary's reached base safely streak was extended to 19 consecutive games with his first-inning single. His streak extends back to the last six games of 2024.
COMING UP
  • The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT/11 a.m. PDT. Santa Clara left-hander Sebastian Schreiber and Texas lefty Dylan Volantis are Sunday's probable starters. Fans can find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
