Baseball Rallies Late vs. Gonzaga in Game Two

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team put the tying run on deck in the bottom of the ninth Saturday, but first-place Gonzaga was able to hold on late for a 7-4 victory to clinch a series win in game two of the teams' West Coast Conference series at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A leadoff walk and a dropped fly ball started the Broncos' (13-18, 2-6 WCC) ninth-inning rally. Hayden Jung-Goldberg logged his first RBI as a Bronco with a sacrifice fly, and Ferroggiaro tallied his third hit of the game with an RBI single to pull the Broncos to within three at 7-4.

  • The Bulldogs (17-14, 10-1 WCC) made a pitching change at that point, bringing in Erik Hoffberg. Hoffberg retired the only two batters he faced with a fly out and a strikeout to end the game, earning his third save of the year in the process.

  • Ferroggiaro doubled in the third and singled in the fifth for his other two hits on the day, tying his career high of three in a game. Devine scored two runs after homering in the eighth and scoring in the ninth after reaching on an error. Malcolm Williams went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

  • Gonzaga took the lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout after Ty Yukumoto had led off the game with a double. They added another run in the third on a double steal, as it was Yukumoto who crossed the plate to make it 2-0. Luca DiPaolo hit a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth to make it 4-0 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs put together a two-out rally in the fifth for two more runs on back-to-back two-out singles and a two-run double from Gage Mestas that made it 6-0 at the time.

  • Yukumoto went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for Gonzaga from their leadoff spot. Gage Mestas went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Miles Gosztola (4-5) threw five innings for the victory, only allowing one earned run (two total) and striking out four. Jace Gillmore, Jack Lazark and Vincent Braga each threw shutout innings of relief for Santa Clara.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
