ORANGE, Calif. — The Santa Clara University women's water polo team wrapped up its final road trip of the regular season in style Friday, beating Chapman, 14-13, in a non-conference game at the Allred Aquatics Center.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (6-17) started the game on a 6-0 run that carried into the second period. It got goals from four different players to start, including two each from Sydney Maccabe and Libby Slater.
Â
- Chapman (11-12) finally got its first goal of the game with only 42 seconds left in the first half on a penalty shot. It took a power play to the Panthers their second goal, and it wasn't until the third period when they finally scored their first full-strength goal.
Â
- Santa Clara got out to a huge, 9-4 lead in the third period and carried an 11-7 advantage into the final frame. Chapman charged late, though, scoring six goals in both the third and fourth periods to make it a game. The Panthers got as close as 11-9 a minute into the fourth, but Megan Chambliss would score twice and Slater once more to give the Broncos their 14 goals and hold on for the victory.
Â
- Slater led the Broncos with a career-high five goals. Chambliss and Maccabe each added three goals. Chloe Rizof and Kate Rodman also found the back of the net, rounding out the scoring for SCU.
Â
- Haley Tassell tied her career high with 11 saves. Panthers goalkeeper Katrina McCay managed six saves, while Zoey Francis added four more. Chapman was led by Alyssa Fricker, who scored eight goals. Kendall Pappan contributed three goals, while Riley Eaves and Nina Bastick also scored.
