Baseball Edged by Hawai'i in Midweek Tilt

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — A flash of power put the Santa Clara University baseball team ahead Tuesday night, but visiting Hawai'i's bullpen locked things down from there, with the Rainbow Warriors' offense scraping across two runs late to escape Stephen Schott Stadium with a 5-3 non-conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos (13-16) responded quickly after falling behind, 2-0, in the top of the third with a big, go-ahead, opposite-field, three-run home run from Dylan Joyce. Mateo Garcia and Niko Olson had drawn two leadoff walks to start the rally and help put the Broncos ahead, 3-2.

  • Outside of the teams scoring a combined five runs in the third inning, Tuesday's game was mostly a pitchers' duel. Eight total pitchers who appeared in the game did not allow a run, as both teams utilized their bullpens ahead of a big conference weekend series starting Friday.

  • The Broncos mounted another rally in the ninth, looking for their ninth comeback win of the year. Johnny Luetzow reached on a hit-by-pitch to bring the tying run to the plate, and Luke Devine sent a ball through the left side for a two-out single, bringing the winning run to bat. Hawai'i's closer Ethan Thomas buttoned things up after that, getting a strikeout to end the game and escape with the victory.

  • Hawai'i (23-8) broke a scoreless tie in the third after Kamana Nahaku hit an RBI single, followed by another RBI from Jordan Donahue on a groundout, putting the Rainbow Warriors up, 2-0.

  • Hawai'i tied the game in the fifth inning at 3-3 on another RBI groundout after the Broncos had led for two innings. It was an unearned in the seventh that put the Rainbow Warriors up for good. Ben Zeigler-Namoa led off with a double and moved to third on an error before scoring on a sacrifice fly, making it 4-3

  • Dylan Joyce hit his fifth homer of the year and increased his RBI total to 28. Devine had impressive hitting today, going 2 for 4 with a double. Two pitchers, relievers Sebastian Schreiber and RJ Meyn, led the Broncos with three strikeouts each.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 1st: Josh Johnson made his first appearance of 2025 and his first career start as a Bronco on Tuesday, throwing one shutout inning with two strikeouts.
  • 10: Santa Clara had 10 strikeouts as a staff Tuesday against Hawai'i. It was the team's ninth double-digit strikeouts game of the season. It is 6-3 in those games.
