Saint Mary's Keeps Baseball at Bay to Clinch Series

MORAGA, Calif. — Tate Medicoff continued his strong finish to his freshman season Friday for the Santa Clara University baseball team, going 2 for 4 with another home run and three RBIs in the season's penultimate game, as host Saint Mary's clinched a West Coast Conference series victory with an 8-4 win at Louis Guisto Field at Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Medicoff hit his second home run in as many days – a two-run blast in the sixth – to pull Santa Clara (20-29, 7-16 WCC) back within one at 3-2. He singled home another run in the Broncos' two-run eighth that made it a four-run game at 8-4 and put the tying run in the hole for SCU. Thomas Ferroggiaro notched his third consecutive multi-hit game, also going 2 for 4 from the top spot in the order.

  • A two-run single in the second from Tanner Griffith and another RBI single in the fifth put Saint Mary's (30-23, 14-9 WCC) ahead 3-0. The Gaels responded to Medicoff's sixth-inning homer with two runs of their own in the bottom half to go back up, 5-2, then added three insurance runs in the seventh, including a two-run homer from Eddie Madrigal.

  • Max Bayles (3-6) finished his sophomore campaign with 105 strikeouts after striking out three more on Friday. He walked a career-high six, only two of which that scored, but eventually led to his exiting the game after the fifth. The second-year righty set career season highs this season in strikeouts, games started (10) and innings pitched (61 2/3), and still held opponents to only a .232 batting average against. Caden Wooster (1 2/3 innings pitched) and Vincent Braga (1 IP) also had a strikeout each in their relief appearances Friday.

  • Saint Mary's got four multi-hit games from Madrigal, Griffith, Diego Castellanos and Ian Armstrong. All of them except for Griffith (2 for 3) went 2 for 4. Lefty Dylan Delvecchio (5-3) earned the victory for the Gaels with only two runs allowed in six innings, striking out seven and scattering four hits.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: Friday's game broke a streak of six consecutive games that at least one Santa Clara batter had been hit by a pitch. Before Friday, the Broncos had drawn multiple hit-by-pitches in five straight games (since May 6 versus Stanford).
  • 7: The Santa Clara offense has hit at least one home run in seven consecutive games dating to May 3 at Portland. It has had three multi-homer games in that stretch, including Thursday's explosion of four long balls.
COMING UP
