MORAGA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team's offense concluded the 2025 season with a bang Saturday, scoring 10 runs on 12 hits, but host Saint Mary's came all the way back from a six-run deficit to complete a West Coast Conference series sweep with a 12-10 victory at Louis Guisto Field at Brother Ronald Gallagher Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara's offense awoke like a sleeping giant 4 1/2 weeks ago and closed out 2025 on fire. Saturday's 10-run, 10-hit performance was the Broncos' 10th game since April 18 scoring at least seven runs, and 11th time with double-digit hits. Santa Clara (20-30, 7-17 WCC) homered for the eighth consecutive game and 13th in its last 14 to end the season, and it drew nine free passes (five walks, four hit-by-pitches) to give it eight or more freebies in six of its last seven contests.
Â
- Kai Cunningham accented the afternoon with his first career home run, a three-run blast in the third that put the Broncos up, 7-1, at the time. Ben Cleary's RBI double in the fifth capped another three-run inning, giving SCU a 10-4 lead. The Broncos had grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second with only two base hits after Saint Mary's (31-23, 15-9 WCC) walked two batters, hit two others and committed two errors in the inning.
Â
- The Gaels scored eight unanswered runs from the sixth to the eighth to come from behind. They went through four Santa Clara pitchers to do it, scoring three in the sixth, taking the lead for good with four in the seventh, and tacking on an insurance run in the eighth. Four consecutive hits to start the seventh pulled Saint Mary's within one at 10-9. Eddie Madrigal's first-pitch RBI single tied the game at 10-10, and Cody Kashimoto's safety squeeze sacrifice bunt put SMC up, 11-10.
Â
- Cunningham finished 2 for 2 with three runs scored and three RBIs to go with his first career long ball, one of four multi-hit performances for the Broncos. Max Ross went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, Johnny Luetzow went 2 for 4 and scored twice, and Dylan Joyce went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Â
- Saint Mary's got most of its damage from the lower part of its batting order. 6-7-8 hitters Diego Castellanos, Jared Mettam and Ian Armstrong went a combined 11-for-14 (.786) with seven RBIs and seven runs scored. Madrigal went 2 for 6 with four RBIs from the top of the order. The Gaels used nine different pitchers Saturday, with Sean Cannon (4-0) earning the win in 1 2/3 innings of relief, and Derik Eaquinto logging his fourth save.
