Broncos Take Series Finale at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — Another strong starting pitching performance from Cooper Lanz and a season-high five multi-hit showings from the lineup Saturday carried the Santa Clara University baseball team to a 5-1 West Coast Conference road victory over Portland in the series finale at Joe Etzel Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lanz (4-1) earned his fourth victory in his last five appearances, only allowing one run on two hits while pitching into the sixth inning for the second consecutive time. He struck out five, only one short of the career high he set last week versus Pacific. Lanz has posted a 1.08 ERA in his last six appearances (since March 30) for the Broncos (18-25, 6-12 WCC), only allowing three earned runs in 25 total innings pitched.

  • Meanwhile, the Broncos' lineup tallied five multi-hit games for the first time all season, led by 3-for-5 showings from both Johnny Luetzow and Tate Medicoff. Ben Cleary (2 for 4) gave Santa Clara the lead for good in the fifth inning with a solo home run, his second of the season. Dylan Joyce (2 for 5) also hit a home run – his sixth in the last seven games – a two-run shot in the top of the ninth that gave the Broncos some insurance over the Pilots (20-24, 11-7 WCC) with a 5-1 lead.

  • It was Luetzow who drove in the tying run in the third inning on a one-out single, making it 1-1. For Medicoff, it was his fourth multi-hit game in his last six. He's batting .550 (11 for 20) with five RBIs, two doubles and a home run during that stretch. Koen Carston turned in his fifth multi-hit game of the year, going 2 for 4. His RBI double in the eighth brought home Mateo Garcia and made it 3-1.

  • Victor Martinez earned his third save of the season with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief. He only allowed one hit while striking out six. Portland starter Rembisz (4-3) took the loss with two runs allowed on nine hits in five innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 11: Joyce's ninth-inning home run was his 11th of the year. It gave him 52 career collegiate home runs after he hit two last season and 39 in four years (2020-23) at the University of Puget Sound.
  • 11: Lanz and Martinez combined for 11 strikeouts on Saturday. It was the 14th game this season Santa Clara pitchers have racked up double-digit strikeouts in a game. They are 8-6 in those games.
  • 11: Saturday was the Broncos' 11th come-from-behind victory of the season after trailing, 1-0, through two innings. Santa Clara has erased 24 separated deficits this season at any point in a game, win or lose.
COMING UP
  • The Broncos begin their final home stand of the season on Tuesday when they welcome El Camino Real rival Stanford on Tuesday before hosting first-place San Diego in a three-game WCC series starting Friday. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
