Broncos' Bats Stay Hot in Rout of Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Santa Clara University baseball team's offensive awakening continued to roll on Tuesday, as the Broncos scored 13 runs on 15 hits in a 13-6 non-conference routing of El Camino Real rival Stanford at Stephen Schott Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (19-25) reached double-digit runs against Stanford (24-21) for the third time in the last six matchups between the schools (since 2023). The Broncos' 15 hits marked their highest total since collecting 17 against the Cardinal on May 9, 2023 — also at Schott. Every starter recorded at least one hit as the team extended its hot streak: seven of its last nine games have featured at least five runs and 10 or more hits, raising the team batting average 15 points since April 19.

  • Tuesday's victory, believe it or not, was the Broncos' 12th come-from-behind win of the year. Stanford jumped ahead 5-0 with a trio of home runs in the first two innings. Rintaro Sasaki crushed a go-ahead three-run homer to right-center in the first, followed by back-to-back solo shots from Charlie Bates and Luke Lavin in the second.

  • But that's where the Stanford offense shut down and the Santa Clara bullpen stepped up. Santa Clara's bullpen locked in from there. After Lavin's one-out blast, Stanford managed just seven more hits — only one for extra bases — over the final 7 2/3 innings. Henry Stewart settled things down with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Caden Wooster (1-3) picked up his first win of the year, allowing just one run and striking out four in 2 1/3 innings. Andrew Habermann shut the door with two scoreless frames, giving up only one hit while striking out two.

  • The turning point came in the fifth inning when Santa Clara erupted for six runs — all unearned — five of which came with two outs. The rally began with Ben Cleary reaching on an error. Johnny Luetzow laid down a bunt single to tie the game at 5-5. Luke Devine was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give SCU a 6-5 lead, and Mateo Garcia followed with a bases-clearing triple to right-center, blowing the game open. Dylan Joyce capped the outburst by beating out an infield single to make it 10-5.

  • The Broncos had already started chipping away. Max Ross got them on the board with a two-run blast to center in the second. Garcia scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 5-3, then drove in Ross with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to cut it to 5-4.

  • Garcia powered the Broncos' offense from the top of the order, driving in a career-high six RBIs and scoring two others. He reached base four times Tuesday, going 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and two walks. Ross finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Devine went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while Malcolm Williams went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and a run scored. Santa Clara got six multi-hit performances in all from its lineup Tuesday.

  • For Stanford, Bates led the way, going 3 for 3 with a home run, RBI, run scored and walk. Leadoff man Trevor Haskins was 2 for 4 but was stranded twice at third base. The Cardinal finished just 2 for 10 (.200) with runners in scoring position. Cardinal starter Ryan Speshyock (1-2) took the loss, allowing six unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 6: The Broncos had six multi-hit performances Tuesday, their most since also having six just over a year ago in a 6-5, 17-hit win over Saint Mary's on April 27, 2024, also at Schott Stadium.
  • 6: Garcia's six RBIs are the most by a Bronco in a game since Efrain Manzo also had six last season in the Broncos' 11-0 win at Pacific on May 16, 2024.
  • 12: It took until his final at-bat of the game in the bottom of the eighth, but Thomas Ferroggiaro extended his active hitting streak to 12 games with a slow roller back to the pitcher. It's the longest hitting streak by any Bronco this season.
