Men’s Tennis Well Represented in ITA Mid-Major and Regional Rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Santa Clara men's tennis program is well represented in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division I Men's Mid-Major Team Rankings and the Regional Team, Singles, and Doubles Rankings that was released on Wednesday.

The Broncos are ranked No. 25 in the Mid-Major rankings and No. 6 in the Northwest Regional rankings.  Alexander Watanabe Eriksson came in at No. 20 in the Northwest Regional singles rankings while Luca Bluett and John Kim were ranked No. 8 in the Northwest Regional doubles list.

The Mid-Major rankings consist of the Top 25 teams competing outside the Power Four conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC) while the Regional rankings consist of the Top 10 team rankings, Top 20 singles rankings, and Top 10 doubles rankings from the 13 regions.

This season, Santa Clara finished with an overall record of 15-9 including 5-2 in the West Coast Conference to finish tied for second in league play.  They qualified for the WCC Tournament for the seventh straight year that it has been played and were ranked in the ITA rankings for 11 straight weeks during the regular season, finishing at No. 73 nationally.

The No. 25 Mid-Major ranking was the third highest among all WCC schools behind San Diego and Pepperdine.  And the No. 6 Regional ranking was the second highest among WCC schools in the Northwest region that includes Pacific, Portland, Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.

Watanabe Eriksson, an All-WCC singles honorable mention selection, posted an 8-11 singles record including 2-1 against ranked opponents playing mostly atop the lineup.  He defeated ranked players in back-to-back matches and was named WCC Singles Player of the Week when he took down No. 29 Gianluca Brunkow of UC Santa Barbara and No. 62 Azuma Visaya of Hawai'i.  After the wins, Watanabe Eriksson entered the ITA singles rankings at No. 104.

Bluett and Kim garnered All-WCC doubles second team recognitions after going 14-7 overall as a tandem including 12-6 during the spring dual match season and 4-2 in WCC play.  They played atop the doubles lineup all season long and was named WCC Doubles Team of the Week back on Feb. 11.  The duo also defeated the No. 69 doubles team of Carson Baker and Jett Middleton from Boise State.
