BOZEMAN, Mont. - Santa Clara women's volleyball cruised to a 3-0 sweep of the Nevada Wolf Pack on Friday afternoon at the Shroyer Gymnasium. The Broncos saw deficits in both sets two and three, but were able to take control late in the set, fighting back for nail-biting victories.
Morgan Hayes and
Grace Flanagan led the way with 10 kills each, while freshman outside hitter
Ashlynn Reilly earned her first start of the season, tallying a team high 11 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos (5-5) scored six of the first seven points, and later led 8-3 after a service ace from Layla Truitt. A service ace from Nevada's Kinsley Singleton cut the lead to 12-11, but the Broncos scored three straight after a kill from Morgan Hayes. Another three point rally made it 18-13, and a Cate Shanahan kill capped four straight Bronco points to take a 24-15 lead. A kill from Grace Flanagan ended set one in favor of the Broncos, 25-17.
- A service ace from Selin Aslayan put the Broncos up 8-5 to open set two. Nevada battled back, taking an 11-10 lead, but a kill by Truitt capped off four straight Bronco points to take back the advantage. Nevada again tied it at 14, and scored three straight to take an 18-16 lead forcing a Bronco timeout.
- A kill from Aslayan tied it back up at 18, but two straight Nevada points put them ahead 22-20, and later 23-22. However, the Broncos scored the final three points of set two capped off by a kill from Shanahan to take the set away from the Wolf Pack, 25-23.
- Nevada (4-6) took an early lead in set three, but the Broncos scored three straight capped off by an ace from Kapihe to take a 9-7 lead. Another service ace, this time from Lexi Trapani put the Broncos up 15-13, and later 17-14 after a kill from Danielle Brown. However, five straight Nevada points put them ahead 19-18, and later, 21-19.
- Although, the Broncos weren't done yet. Santa Clara scored five of the final six points capped off by a kill from Kapihe to steal set three 25-23, and complete the sweep.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Morgan Hayes and Grace Flanagan led the Broncos with 10 kills each, Flanagan's first game of the season in double figures, and Hayes' sixth.
- Freshman outside hitter Ashlynn Reilly led the team with 11 digs, in her first Bronco start of her career.
- Macy Hinshaw led the Broncos with 31 assists, continuing her streak of 10 straight games in double figures.
- The Broncos improve to 21-6 overall against the Wolf Pack.
