CARMEL, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's golf freshman duo of
Tucker Sweeney and
Max Margolis competed as individuals at the RCA Electric Invitational hosted by Menlo College at Quali Lodge Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday. The outing could not have gone much better for either as Sweeney walked away as the tournament's individual medalist, his first career victory at the collegiate level, while Margolis was hot on his heels with a third-place finish.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Sweeney couldn't have asked for a better way to open his time at the tournament. The Pasadena product turned in an 8-under 63 in the opening round, which is tied with teammate Emil Nielsen for the lowest score-to-par by a freshman in program history. He followed up with a 2-over 73 in the second round to end the opening day 6-under 136.
- After briefly slipping into a tie for the lead, Sweeney grabbed control for good in Tuesday's final round, turning in five birdies in total and finishing 2-under 69 to bring his 54-hole total to 8-under 205. He finished the event four-strokes better than runner-up Samson Li of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
- Margolis also had a solid opening round with a 3-under 68 followed by a 1-over 72 to finish day one 2-under 140. He closed the event strong at 1-under 70 on Tuesday to finish 3-under 210 total for a career-best third-place finish.
