Overfelt, Broncos Finish Runner-Up At Palouse Collegiate

PULLMAN, Wash. - Santa Clara senior men's golfer Calder Overfelt came ever so close to capturing his first-career individual title on Wednesday at the Palouse Collegiate. The Newport Beach product was on a record-breaking pace and held a one-stroke lead heading into his final three holes (16-18) of the final round. Unfortunately, he bogeyed the par-3 No. 16 and opened the door for Washington State's Dylan Burcham who moved up one spot into a tie for the lead as a result. Overfelt rolled in for par on the final two holes, but Burcham sunk his birdie putt on the par-5 18th to clinch the victory. Despite not winning the individual trophy, Overfelt's overall performance was one for the record books as he finished 14-under 199. The score is tied for the third-lowest to par in program history and is just the second sub-200 total in program history, joining J.P. Odland's 198 (-15) from last season.

As a whole, Santa Clara turned in one of the finest team rounds in program history on Wednesday, besting their round one total of 16-under 268 by compiling a 17-under 267 - tied for the third-best score-to-par in program history. The Broncos three-round total of 39-under 813 is tied for the second-lowest score-to-par in program history and led to a runner-up team finish behind the host-Cougars, who finished 45-under 807 to win the event at the par 71, Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Overfelt shot 3-under 68 in the final round with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 9 hole. He finished the event with 17 total birdies, one eagle and just five bogeys.
  • Matt Robles picked right up where he left off following a sensational freshman campaign that saw him win WCC Freshman of the Year Honors. Robles turned in an outstanding 11-under 202 (tied for his second lowest score-to-par in his career) and closed the event with a bang. The Downey, Calif. product was bogey-free in the final round with four birdies for a 4-under 67 total.
  • Robles now has four top-five finishes and six in the top-10 in just 12 career outings.
  • After an up-and-down opening day, junior J.P. Odland bounced back in the final round to shoot not only Santa Clara's top round of the day, but the best round of his collegiate career. The Tiburon, Calif. product was 8-under 63 for the day with just one bogey against seven birdies and an eagle on the 18th. The tally pushed him 29 spots up the leader board to finish in a tie for ninth at 8-under 205.
  • Odland's 8-under 63 is tied for the fourth-lowest score-to-par in program history.
  • Odland now has nine career top-10 finishes, good for sixth-most in program history.
  • Graduate transfer Kevin Hollomon also bounced back in the final round, as did freshman Tucker Sweeney (playing as an individual). Both newcomers were 2-under 69 for the day to finish the event on a high note.
  • Santa Clara finished 11 shots ahead of third-place Colorado (824) and Pacific (824) while Boise State finished fifth (829).
