ALBUQUERQUE - It was a tale of two rounds for Santa Clara men's golf on Friday at the opening day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The Broncos began the day with a collective 1-under 287 to finish the first round tied for eighth, but shot up the leader board in round No. 2 thanks to an 11-under 277 total. Santa Clara climbed to as high as second in the standings, but finished the day in a three-way tie for fourth at 12-under 564.
Graduate transfer
Kevin Hollomon had the most consistent day on the team, turning in a 69 and 71 for a 4-under 140 total to put himself in a tie for 12th at the par 72 Championship Golf Course.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Broncos' 11-under 277 second round was the third-best round of the day among the 18-team field.
- Hollomon was the lone Bronco to shoot under par in the first round, turning in a season-best 3-under 69. He followed with a 1-under 71 in the second round.
- Both Jack Hayden and J.P. Odland shot 3-under 69 in the second round to shoot up the leader board. Hayden climbed 16 spots into a tie for 18th while Odland climbed 20 spots to move into a tie for 27th.
- Calder Overfelt, fresh off his best-career outing at the Palouse Collegiate, had a slow start with a 3-over 75 in the opening round, but shook it off in round No. 2 to shoot Santa Clara's lowest round of the day at 4-under 68. He climbed 36 spots to tie for 36th at 1-over 143.
- Host-New Mexico holds the team lead at 18-under 558 followed by Colorado (560) and USC (562). Emil Alberts, playing as an individual from New Mexico, leads the field at 9-under 135.
