Broncos Drop Five Set Thriller to UNLV

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's volleyball lost a tough five set battle over UNLV Saturday night on the last day of the Santa Clara Mission Classic. The Broncos won sets one and four, before just falling short in the fifth set. Cate Shanahan tied her career high with 18 kills, adding 10 digs for her second career double-double. Layla Truitt also earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after posting 29 kills in three matches, averaging 9.67 kills per set.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Four straight Bronco points capped off by a kill from Layla Truitt put the Broncos up 12-9. However, four straight points from UNLV helped them regain the lead, 16-15. Another three straight UNLV points put them ahead 19-17, forcing a Santa Clara timeout. The Broncos tied it at 20, but five straight UNLV points gave UNLV the first set 25-20.
  • Five straight UNLV points put them ahead 8-5, but a kill from Tia Kapihe capped a three point Bronco rally to tie it at 8. UNLV again jumped ahead 11-8, and later 14-11, but the Broncos battled back to tie it at 18 after a kill from Morgan Hayes. UNLV took a 21-20 lead, but the Broncos scored the final five points of the set capped off by a service ace from Selin Aslayan to take set two 25-21.
  • The Rebels (3-2) jumped out to an 8-5 advantage to open set three, and later 12-7. A four point rally for the Rebels made it 19-10, and later 24-13. A kill by Hayes made it 24-15, but UNLV ended with the better hand, taking set three 25-15.
  • The Broncos (1-4) scored the first three points of set four, but five straight UNLV points gave them a 9-8 lead. The Broncos took a 14-12 lead and UNLV scored three straight to regain the lead. Neither team really got an edge after that trading points until the Broncos scored five in a row capped off by a kill from Grace Flanagan to take set four 25-21.
  • UNLV jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth set, and later 10-4, forcing a Santa Clara timeout. A kill from Shanahahn matched her career high 18th kill to cut the lead to 14-9, but a service error ended the match as UNLV took set five 15-9.
