Lanz Earns Spot on "Stopper of the Year" Award Watch List

Cooper Lanz limited opponents to a team-best .148 batting average against in 2025.
DALLAS — Santa Clara University senior right-handed pitcher Cooper Lanz has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason "Stopper of the Year" Watch List, the organization announced Tuesday.

Lanz, who joined the Broncos in 2025 after previous stops at Pacific and Modesto Junior College, earned all-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention recognition in his first season at Santa Clara while also collecting "Silver" honors on the 2024–25 WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Lanz appeared in 13 games in 2025 and moved into the starting rotation late in the season, making four conference starts. He led the team with four wins and posted a 3.75 ERA across 36 innings pitched, striking out 28 while holding opponents to a team-best .148 batting average. Lanz went 4–1 against WCC opponents with a 2.92 ERA and a .132 opponent batting average in 24 2/3 innings. He made his Broncos debut with 1 2/3 perfect innings of relief against CSUN on Feb. 15, earned his first Santa Clara win with five perfect innings at Pepperdine on April 5, and later threw a season-long six innings with a career-high six strikeouts in a win over Pacific on April 27.

Lanz began his collegiate career at Pacific in 2023 and pitched at Modesto Junior College in 2024 before arriving at Santa Clara. Lanz is one of 104 relief pitchers nominated to this year's preseason watch list, and only four total pitchers from the WCC.
