SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara lost a pair of games at Friday's Silicon Valley Classic Tournament, falling to Utah 3-0 in the first game and to Cal 8-2 in the second.
Game 1: Utah 3 - Santa Clara 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hailey Maestretti tossed a two-hit shutout throwing an economical 84 pitches to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0. The southpaw struck out six, walked none and allowed a hit to Claire Krotine and Marie Martorella in the third and seventh innings. The only other runner she allowed was a hit batsman and faced just 24 batters over her seven innings of work.
- Utah (6-1) scored a run each in the second, third and fourth innings, all against Bronco starter Hazyl Gray.
- Danika Wilson doubled in Jolie Mayfield for the first run. Mia Gomez, who was the only player with multiple hits in the game, hit a solo homer and Mayfield had a sacrifice fly RBI.
Game 2: Cal 8 - Santa Clara 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Cal (2-5) scored six runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-all tie to win 8-2. In the frame, the Bears sent 10 batters to the plate including the go-ahead two run double by Anaya Togia with the bases loaded.
- Starters Cari Ferguson and Mya McGowan went toe-to-toe through the first six frames, giving up two runs each. However, in the seventh, leadoff batter Gator Robinson was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back singles by Kayli Counts and Emma Jackson to load the bases for McGowan's at-bat. Ferguson was replaced by Avery Seva after giving up the double.
- The Bears added four more runs in the inning to break the game open.
- Each time Santa Clara (4-4) scored, the Bears had an answer specifically Anya German. In the third, Elle Merlino tripled taking advantage of a five player infield shift by lifting the ball to the outfield and came home on Caitlyn Golob's single. German knotted the game up with a bloop RBI single in the fourth.
- Rebecca Rubio drove in a run in the fifth to put the Broncos ahead but once again, German came through doubling home the tying run in the sixth. German finished with a game-high three RBIs going 3-for-3.
- McGowan went six innings to pick up her second win of the year while Ferguson dropped to 2-2.
