SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Washington mashed five home runs and Morgan Reimer threw a two-hit shutout to defeat Santa Clara softball 13-0 in the Silicon Valley Classic Tournament finale on Sunday under threatening skies that never materialized.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Giselle Alvarez, Gabi Toney, Zuri Patterson, Ally Hetzel and Riley Peschek each went deep as part of a nine-hit, 13-run outburst by Washington (7-3).
- A day after beating California for the first time in program history as the winning pitcher on record, Ellison Schroeder started in the circle for Santa Clara (6-5). The freshman hurler kept the Husky lineup in check in the first two innings but in the third, Ava Carroll singled in a run and in the fourth, Hetzel homered to put the Huskies up 3-0.
- The Huskies added three more runs in the fifth and went yard three times in the sixth as part of a seven-run inning to break the game wide open against two Bronco relievers.
- Santa Clara (6-5) was only able to get two infield hits from Reimer who issued five walks and struck out five.
- All the home runs came with at least one runner on base.
- The Broncos finished 3-3 over the four day Silicon Valley Classic Tournament.
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara is scheduled to play UC Davis at home on Tuesday.
