SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Santa Clara University baseball senior infielder
Thomas Ferroggiaro and junior right-hander
Max Bayles earned the first West Coast Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards of the season Monday after leading the Broncos through their first three games of the season on the road at California.
Â
Ferroggiaro reached base nine times, scored six runs and stole two bases with two multi-hit performances in three games in Berkeley, Calif. over the weekend. He reached base four times on Friday, going 2 for 3 with two walks and scoring three runs in leading SCU to a mercy rule, 13-2, victory. He'd top that in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, going 3 for 4 with another walk and two runs scored, tying a career high with two stolen bases in one game. He extended his active hitting streak to seven games -- a carryover of his four-game streak to end the 2025 season -- with a double and run scored in Saturday's doubleheader nightcap.
Â
Ferroggiaro has now reached base safely in 21 consecutive games dating back to 2025. Ferroggiaro batted .545, slugged .636 and carried an on-base percentage of .643 in the three games versus the Bears. He also played a flawless second base, making no errors in nine total chances and turning a double play.
Â
Bayles threw four shutout innings with five strikeouts on the road Friday, earning the victory and leading Santa Clara to a blowout, 13-2, run-rule win. He worked around three base runners with fewer than two outs, ending both the first and third innings with strikeouts. Bayles only allowed one runner to reach third base, and only two others past first base in his four innings of work.
Â
It's Bayles' fourth career WCC Pitcher of the Week award after earning the nod three times in 2025. He earned the first two awards of the 2025 season and now has the first one of 2026 as well. The WCC Player of the Week award is a first for Ferroggiaro, who's been with the Broncos since 2023 when he landed on the WCC All-Freshman Team at season's end.
Â
Ferroggiaro, Bayles and the Broncos conclude their series with California at 5 p.m. Monday in their home opener. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
