SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara University softball player Ellison Schroeder was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday with a pair of wins over the weekend.
The freshman hurler tossed a seven-inning complete game against San José State on Saturday and picked up a win in relief versus Fresno State the following day.
Against SJSU, Schroeder kept them hitless through the first 4 1/3 innings and ended up allowing four hits, one run, two walks and three strikeouts in the Broncos 4-1 triumph. In the sixth inning with the Broncos leading 2-0, she pitched out of a bases loaded, no out jam with the lead intact. After getting an out, Schroeder induced a 6-4-3 double play to keep the damage at just one run in the inning.
On Sunday versus Fresno State, Schroeder came in relief in the fifth with the game tied at 1-all and runners in scoring position. She again got a double play to escape the inning and gave up one hit in 2 2/3 innings. Robynn Balmediano drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Broncos a 2-1 victory.
In total, Schroeder tossed 9 2/3 innings, scattered five hits, one run, two walks and five punchouts on the week.
On the season, she has a 4-5 record and a save with a 2.89 ERA.
It is the second straight time that a Santa Clara player was named WCC Pitcher of the Week following Cari Ferguson's recognition last week.
The Broncos next play a three-game series at home against Montana this coming weekend.
