SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 9 Florida State scored seven runs in the opening inning and collected a total of 12 hits en route to an 11-3 run-rule victory over Santa Clara softball in a nonconference tilt on Wednesday night to extend their win streak to 25 games.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first, Florida State (36-4) sent 11 batters to the plate as the first four batters had a hit, against Broncos starter Hazyl Gray, to jump to an early lead. The same four batters - leadoff hitter Isa Torres, Jaysoni Beachum, Marin Heller and Ashtyn Danley - had nine hits and eight RBIs total in the game.
- Torres, who entered the game as the nation's second leading hitter with a .610 batting average, went 4-for-4, scored three time and drove in a pair. She reached base twice in the first, leading off the game with a single and had a two-RBI triple.
- The Seminoles added a run in the fourth on a double by Beachum and brought across three more in the sixth.
- Florida State had committed just 14 errors on the season but was charged with three in the game. One of those, a dropped fly ball by center fielder Kennedy Harp, led to a Broncos run in the third.
- Santa Clara (19-19) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Robynn Balmediano but she was out thrown out at third trying to stretch it out to a triple which ended the game.
- Jazzy Francik pitched two scoreless innings to pick up her 15th win of the season while Gray dropped to 0-4.
