Schroeder and Rubio Headline Six Broncos Named Softball All-WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif.Ellison Schroeder was named West Coast Conference Softball Freshman of the Year and Rebecca Rubio earned a spot on the All-WCC First Team to headline six Bronco players with all-conference recognitions.

Schroeder was also named to the All-Freshman team as well as to the second team along with Taryn Clements, Cairah Curran and Cari Ferguson while Robynn Balmediano garnered honorable mention status.

The all-conference voting and major awards were voted on by the seven conference head coaches.

Rubio played in all 51 games and hit from second spot in the lineup to lead the team with a .349 batting average and a .429 on-base percentage, good for 11th and 8th highest marks, respectively, in the WCC.  In league play, she turned it up a notch to the tune of .382 BA and .469 OBP.  The Buena Park, California native also had 12 stolen bases for the second highest total on the team.  Defensively, Rubio turned a league-high 19 double plays from the shortstop position with a .928 fielding percentage.  This was the second all-league recognition for the junior after being named second team in 2025.

Schroeder had an 11-8 record with three saves and a 2.66 ERA to top the team in the last two categories.  In 29 appearances that spanned 110 1/3 innings, she had six complete games and held the opponents to a .245 batting average.  The right-handed hurler had a three inning save in the season opener against Southern Utah and in her first start, she had a complete game victory over Cal to give the Broncos their first win ever against the Bears in 84 tries.  Schroeder was twice named WCC Pitcher of the Week on March 9 and May 4.

Clements batted .273 with a .417 on-base percentage in 45 games.  40 of the starts came behind the dish where the 2025 WCC Defensive Player of the Year threw out 12 would-be base stealers.  In 17 WCC games, Clements slashed .366/.500/.634 to rank in the top-10 in each category.  This was the second all-league recognition for Clements after being named first team in 2025.

Curran was named all-conference for the third straight season.  The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native, was second team and WCC Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2024 and was first team and WCC Player of the Year as a sophomore.  This season, as a junior, she was named second team after hitting .347 from the leadoff spot starting in all 51 games.  She finished top-10 in the conference in at-bats (170), hits (59), runs (34), triples (4) and stolen base (28).  Defensively, the second baseman, tied for second in double plays turned with 17, behind Rubio.

Ferguson, the WCC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year last season, followed up with a strong sophomore campaign going 12-11 with a 2.72 ERA, 10 complete games and three shutouts to earn second team All-WCC recognition.  The Long Beach, California native led the conference in starts (23) and innings pitched (139.0) and was second in complete games (10) and strikeouts (95).  In WCC games, Ferguson tied for the league-lead in wins with six and was especially tough down the stretch picking up wins in three consecutive games against Seattle U and Saint Mary's when the Broncos' backs were against the wall chasing down the Gaels for the conference crown.  She was named WCC Pitcher of the Week back on March 2 and this is the second all-conference recognition after being named first team in 2025.

Balmediano played in all but one game and started in 48, all at left field where she batted .269 with 10 extra base hits.  In late April, the Bronco senior was the fourth toughest batter to strikeout in the nation fanning once per 56.5 at-bats and finished the season getting fanned just seven times.  This is the second all-league recognition for the Benicia, California native having been named All-WCC second team in 2024.
