Matthew Lawrence found his stride early. Long before he chose to wear a Broncos uniform this fall, the Mercer Island, Wash., native was already hooked on the rhythm of running. For him, the sport wasn't just an outlet — it was a purpose. "I first got into running in 2nd grade because it was one of the few sports I could get my energy out," he said. "I stayed with the sport because it gave me purpose."
Now at Santa Clara University, Lawrence is looking forward to channeling that lifelong passion into the next chapter of his career, combining a top-tier business education in Silicon Valley with the competitive drive of NCAA cross country.
Joining a Team of Purpose
One of the biggest draws to Santa Clara was the program's culture and the people within it. "I was drawn to Santa Clara and the athletics program by the combination of a high-ranked business school in Silicon Valley with a competitive running team," Lawrence said. "There is an extensive alumni network that will guide me to the career I want."
More than anything, he's excited to be surrounded by teammates who share his commitment. "I am most excited to train with a team of guys who are as dedicated to the sport as I am," he said. That environment — built on accountability and shared goals — is exactly what he's been looking for as he transitions from high school standout to collegiate athlete.
Guided by Experience
Lawrence credits much of his growth to his high school coach, whose influence helped shape both his mindset and his love for the sport. "My high school coach has influenced my development as a runner the most," he said. "Lots of her experience and passion for the sport has definitely been passed down to me over the years I was coached."
That foundation carried him through some of his most memorable moments, including one race he'll never forget. "My most memorable moment from my running career was the Hoka invitational my senior year," he said. "I may have misread the course and did my final kick a mile from the finish and had to rally it in — I do not recommend."
A Competitive Edge
Lawrence arrives at Santa Clara with an impressive résumé. He helped his high school team win two WIAA state championships, placed 10th at Nike Cross Regionals Northwest, and posted standout times of 14:43 for 5k, 9:01 for 3200m, and 4:08 for 1600m. Those performances speak to a runner who knows how to compete — and how to finish.
Away from the track, he finds balance in the outdoors. In the summer, he golfs, backpacks, and wakesurfs; in the winter, he's a dedicated skier. And for the record: "I have never beat Minecraft," he said with a laugh.
Looking Ahead
As he begins his first year at Santa Clara, Lawrence's goals are clear and grounded. "My goals are to have a clean transition into college both in academics and athletics," he said. "I hope to start off my college running career off strong and healthy."
With his work ethic, sense of purpose, and the support of a program that matches his ambition, Lawrence is poised to do exactly that — one stride at a time."
