Team Effort, Freshmen Provide SCU Softball With Clutch Win

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif. – Freshman Ashley Haney came up with a two-RBI double in the eighth inning and classmate Briana Rios closed out Northern Colorado with three innings of one-hit softball to lift Santa Clara to an 8-7 win Saturday.

It marked the third game for Santa Clara (2-12) at the 2012 PCSC Crossover Tournament in Moraga. The Broncos, who have played four one-run games this season, bounced back from a pair of tough losses earlier in the week to pick up the win.

"We were all ecstatic that we got this win," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "It was a total team effort, using three pitchers … Ashley Haney came up with a big hit for us and Briana Rios got some big outs."

The Broncos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by Kelly Scribner's three-RBI double, which scored Alyssa Jepsen, Stephanie Fisher and Jamie Wallis. Scribner now has eight RBI this season, which is tied for the team lead.

Sophomore starter Jessica Turner was pitching a good game, but in the fifth and sixth innings, she was called for illegal pitches and Mize turned to Jaymi Bautista-Geiger. Bautista-Geiger left the game with Santa Clara leading 5-4 in the fifth, before Rios came on to work two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.

"(Rios) came in and did a fantastic job," said Mize. "She got a couple key strikeouts and some pop ups that were big."

With the game tied 5-5 in extra innings, singles by Wallis and Breezy Bernard set things up for Haney in the eighth. Her go-ahead two-RBI double was followed by an illegal pitch that scored Bernard to put SCU in front 8-5.

Rios worked through a tough spot, where errors put Northern Colorado runners on base in the bottom of the eighth. However, Rios got a strikeout and induced two groundballs to end it.

The Broncos will look to make it two-straight, when the team faces Seattle on Sunday – a team that edged SCU 3-2 Friday morning.

"We played a nice, sharp game against Seattle on Friday, but did not score enough runs," said Mize. "We can hit and we are hoping for some big production from our offense tomorrow."
