Baseball Drops Third Game to Saint Mary's

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Facing its biggest rival, Santa Clara baseball fell to Saint Mary's by a final score of 10-3. The Broncos are now 10-31 overall and 0-18 in conference while the Gaels are 17-26 and 8-7 in WCC action.

The Broncos return to the field on Tues., April 30 at 6 p.m. at UC Davis.

Powell Fansler (0-2, 4.41) started for Santa Clara and got a loss in 3.0 innings. Fansler allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The offense was led by Justin Gisch who was 2-3. C.J. Jacobe added two RBI while Jose Vizcaino, Jr. was 2-2 with a double and picked up his first collegiate RBI.

Ryan Brockett (4-5, 3.63) started for Saint Mary's and got a win in 6.0-plus innings. Brocket allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Patrick Keane (1-4, 4.71) picked up his sixth save by throwing the last 3.0 innings. The offense was led by Brenden Kalfus who was 3-5 with a run scored and four RBI. Collin Ferguson was 3-4 with two RBI and a walk while Ricky Boas was 2-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.

The scoring got started in the bottom of the fourth when Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Shawn O'Brien walked and Ferguson doubled to left center in from of a RBI single by Darian Ramage that put runners on the corners with no outs. Max Deering entered the game and got the first out on a failed squeeze attempt. Boas answered with a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Gaels up three.

Anthony Villa doubled with one down in the bottom of the fifth and came in to score on a single to right by Ferguson that extended the lead to 4-0.

Saint Mary's blew the game open with a five-spot in the bottom of the sixth. The first three Gaels reached to load the bases and end the day for Deering who was lifted for Chris Mendoza. Markus Melgosa singled in a run and Kalfus followed with a bases-clearing double down the left field life. The fifth run came in with two outs on a single by Ferguson that made it 9-0 Saint Mary's.

The Broncos got on the board with three runs in the top of the seventh. Greg Harisis led off with a single up the middle and Casey Munoz followed with a single through the left side. Pinch hitter Ben Wright singled to right field to load the bases for another pinch hitter, Vizcaino, Jr. Vizcaino singled through the left side to keep the bases loaded. Jacobe pinch-hit and singled up the middle to bring in two more runs and make the score 9-3.

Vizcaino led off the top of the ninth with a double down the right field line. After the first out was recorded, Drew Ozanne singled to right to put runners on the corners but the Broncos were unable to capitalize and Saint Mary's won 10-3.
