SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Halting a two-match losing streak, the Santa Clara women's tennis team defeated California State University, Northridge 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.
"I'm really proud of the team," said head coach Ben Cabell. "They played an excellent match today. It's always tough to win on the road and that's a good team, they were ranked earlier in the year, so they're tough."
The Broncos (3-3) started doubles play off with a 6-2 victory from the duo of Chelby Cooke and Madison Clarke over Skyla Alcon and Vivian Lin. Matadors Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan took a doubles match over Delphine Rouvillois and Zeina El Tawil 6-2, but Santa Clara secured the doubles point on Court 1 behind Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva's narrow 6-4 triumph over Kristen Poei and Mickey Hsu.
"I'm really happy with the way we competed," Cabell said. "It was really nice to have (El Tawil) back in the lineup, she's been out for a couple matches. That really helped."
El Tawil returned to the courts in singles and notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kim of CSUN (2-5).
Clarke tallied a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Lin and Farah went to three sets against Poei, ultimately coming out on top 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
Silva defeated Alcon 6-4, 6-4 to seal the deal for the Broncos and give them the 5-2 conquest.
"It was a real team effort and everyone played well at every spot, so it was great," Cabell said.
Santa Clara faces the University of San Diego on Saturday at 11 a.m. for its next match.
