Wilson Matches Season-Long Outing; Baseball Falls at Gonzaga

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. — Steven Wilson pitched 7.1 innings to match his longest outing of the season Saturday night, but Santa Clara baseball was shut out by Gonzaga 3-0 at Washington Trust Field. The Broncos outhit the Bulldogs 9-6 and both teams played errorless baseball in a game that featured five double plays.

Wilson (L, 3-3) struck out five batters and allowed three earned runs on six hits with three walks. He faced the minimum in four frames, including three inning-ending double plays. The Littleton, Colo. native has pitched six quality starts this season. Gonzaga's Eli Morgan struck out seven batters in 8.0 shutout innings and allowed eight hits alongside two walks.

The Bulldogs (24-12, 12-5 WCC) opened the scoring for the second time in as many days on a three-run homer in the second inning; Nick Brooks drove a full count pitch over the left field wall to put the hosts in front. Tyler Frost added a two-out, RBI double in the sixth.

Santa Clara's leadoff hitters reached base four times in the last six innings. The Broncos (16-20, 4-10) got back-to-back singles from Jake Brodt and Kert Woods to start off the seventh. With Braden Frankfort at bat, both baserunners were put in motion on a 2-1 pitch and Gonzaga catcher Joey Harris threw down to third base, which resulted in Brodt being tagged out in a rundown.

The Broncos had the potential game-tying run at the plate six times in the last four innings, including pinch hitter Stevie Berman in the ninth, who struck out to end the contest. Kyle Cortopassi went 3-for-4 to lead the team.

Santa Clara and Gonzaga wrap up the series Sunday at noon. LHP Jason Seever (4-1, 4.17 ERA) makes the start for the Broncos against RHP Gage Burland (0-0, 7.04).

GAME NOTES: First pitch was at 6:08 p.m. … time of the game was 2:39 … attendance was 938 ... rain fell intermittently throughout the contest, mostly in the early innings.
