Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball lost 3-1 to Wake Forest in the series finale on Sunday, unable to generate much offense against Demon Deacon starter Colin Peluse.
The right-handed Peluse pitched eight shutout innings scattering three hits and two walks before exiting with 108 pitches. Rayne Supple came in the ninth inning to close out the game but not before Bronco third baseman
John Cresto hit a solo home run to break the Wake Forest shutout bid.
For Cresto, it was the third consecutive game with a home run and fourth overall on the season.
Senior
Joe Becht had two of the four hits for the Broncos (4-3) including a leadoff triple in the bottom of the sixth. Down 2-0 in the game, Becht sent the ball to straight center for his first triple of the season. However, the Broncos could not cash in on the opportunity stranding him at third.
Wake Forest (3-5) scored in the third inning against Bronco starter
Luke Martin-Resnick on Jake Mueller's RBI single. It scored Cole McNamee who reached base on a Cresto error.
Mueller led off the fifth with a single and came home on a Shane Muntz single for the second Deacs run of the game against Bronco reliever
Michael Praszker.
Wake Forest added an insurance run in the ninth, taking a 3-0 lead to the bottom half of the inning before Cresto's homerun.
The Broncos sent seven pitchers to the mound including three freshmen. It held the Wake Forest offense to two earned runs while issuing four walks and lowering the staff ERA to 3.31 on the season.
Santa Clara continues its homestand on Tuesday, taking on Nevada from the Mountain West conference. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
