Gevargiz and Tabachnik Wins Doubles Match in Day One of Battle in the Bay Classic

 
SAN FRANCISCO – In day one of the Battle in the Bay Classic on Friday, Santa Clara women's tennis sophomores Elvena Gevargiz and Katya Tabachnik won their doubles match while paired together.  However, both Gevargiz and Tabachnik lost their singles matches.  
 
In the morning doubles draw comprised of eight teams, the fourth-seeded Gevargiz and Tabachnik defeated the fifth-seed Emily Maxfield and Mya Bui of San Francisco, 8-5.  The sophomore duo will next play in the semi finals against one-seed Ana Neffa and Constance Branstine of USC on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. PT.  
 
In the sixteen player singles draw, 12th-seeded Gevargiz lost to the fifth-seed Hanna Borjeson of San Francisco in three sets, 6-0, 6-7(4), 6-3.   Tabachnik, who was seeded 14th, fell to the third-seed Branstine, 6-4, 7-5.    
 
Both Gevargiz and Tabachnik will play in the consolation bracket on Saturday.
