CORVALLIS, OREG. - The Santa Clara women's volleyball team picked up their first West Coast Conference win on Thursday, Oct. 10, sweeping Oregon State at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oreg. The Broncos were led by
Lauren Grover with 10 kills and
Grace Flanagan with a career high five service aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos (4-9) scored the first three points of the match, and later took a 7-3 lead after a kill by Oren Abutbul. The Broncos scored three in a row again to take an 11-5 lead, forcing an Oregon State timeout. After a service error by the Broncos, Santa Clara scored five points in a row capped off by back-to-back service aces from Grace Flanagan to go up 16-6. The Broncos rode the momentum, finishing off the set with a kill from Layla Truitt to take the first set 25-16.
- The Broncos found themselves down 8-6 to start the second set, but rallied scoring seven in a row to take a 13-8 advantage. The Broncos again rallied, scoring four in a row capped off by a kill from Oren Abutbul to take an 18-10 lead. A kill by Lauren Grover made it 23-14, and a kill from Oren Abutbul gave the Broncos the second set victory, 25-17.
- The Broncos again started hot, scoring five in a row to take a 6-1 lead to open the third set. However, Oregon State (3-10) battled back, scoring three in a row to cut the lead to 8-6. The Broncos again rallied scoring four in a row to make it 14-8. The Beavers scored four out of five points to make it 17-13, but that's the closest they would get as the Broncos scored three in a row to take a 21-14 lead capped off by a kill from Elena Radeff.
- The Broncos scored two straight to make it match point at 24-17, and a kill from Oren Abutbul gave the Broncos the sweep, 25-18.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
- Grace Flanagan had a career high five service aces.
- The Broncos hit .344, their second highest hitting percentage this season.
- Lauren Grover led the Broncos with 10 kills, her fifth game of the season in double figures.
- Macy Hinshaw led the Broncos with 20 assists.
