Broncos Defeat Pacific in Four Set Thriller

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's volleyball team avenged an earlier loss to the Pacific Tigers in a four set battle on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Leavey Center. The Broncos were led by Alayna Crabtree who tallied her fifth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs, and Macy Hinshaw who had her third double-double of the season with 25 assists and 11 digs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Pacific (12-6, 2-4) jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Broncos scored three in a row to tie the set at 4. The Tigers took a 10-6 lead, but the Broncos again battled back scoring three straight to tie the game at 13, then capitalized off three straight Pacific attacking errors to take a 16-14 advantage.
  • The Broncos scored six of the next seven points to take a 22-16 capped off by a service ace from Grace Flanagan, forcing a Pacific timeout. A kill by Elena Radeff and Alayna Crabtree capped off the first set victory for the Broncos 25-20.
  • Pacific again took an early lead to start the second set at 6-3, and later 10-5. However, the Broncos scored three in a row capped off by a Grace Flanagan kill to cut the lead to 13-11, forcing a Pacific timeout. A kill by Alayna Crabtree cut the lead to 14-13, and three straight points gave the Broncos an 18-17 lead, leading to another Tigers timeout.
  • A kill from Oren Abutbul made it 23-22, but Pacific scored two in a row to go up 24-23. Pacific scored two of the next three, but the Broncos scored the final three points of the set capped off by a kill from Alayna Crabtree to give them the second set, 27-25.
  • The Broncos rode the momentum taking a 3-0 lead to open set three after an ace from Lauren Grover. A kill by Lauren Grover made it 9-4, but Pacific scored four straight to make it 9-8. The Broncos responded, going up 14-11 after a service ace from Lauren Grover. Pacific scored three straight to go up 16-15, and another two in a row to take an 18-16 lead.
  • A kill by Alayna Crabtree made it 24-23, however, the Tigers scored the last point of the set to take set three, 25-23.
  • The Broncos scored the first two points of set four and later went up 14-11 after back-to-back kills from Lauren Grover. Pacific scored two in a row to cut it to 15-14, but a kill from Layla Truitt and Oren Abutbul gave the Broncos an 18-15 lead. Three straight Broncos points gave the Broncos a 23-17 lead, and a kill by Lauren Grover was the dagger as the Broncos took set four 25-18, and the match 3-1.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Alayna Crabtree recorded her fifth double-double of the season tonight with 15 kills and 10 digs.
  • Oren Abutbul added 12 kills, her sixth game of the season in double figures.
  • Lexi Trapani had a season high 22 digs.
  • Macy Hinshaw had her third double-double of the season, leading the Broncos with 25 assists and 11 digs..
